In the early 1920's Wolseley was the UK's largest motor manufacturer. Wolseley Motors Timited was sold to Morris Motors Limited on 1st July 1935. The Wolseley Hornet engine was very successful and powered Woleseleys, Morris Minors and MG cars. The engine began in 1930 with 1271cc, increasing to 1378cc in 1934, together with "specials" at 1604cc.
The cars were produced as "rolling chassis" with engine and the cars were finished by specialist coachbuilders. The Daytona Special was built as an open 4-seater sports by the coachmaker Eustace Watkins with a new cost of 220 pounds. Only 148 of these 1604cc specials were produced on the 95inch chassis.
